"Paediatric HSCT: What Blood Group?" Presented by Martina Williams, Chief Medical Scientist, CHI at Crumlin

Haematopoetic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) is a life saving procedure for a small cohort of paediatric patients. Supporting patients following a blood group mismatched HSCT is a particular challenge for the Blood Transfusion laboratory. Through a series of case studies this presentation will discuss some of these challenges and the decision making process around appropriate blood product selection.
Biography:
Martina Williams is the Chief Medical Scientist in the Blood Transfusion laboratory Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin. She spent her formative professional years in the Irish Blood Transfusion Service. Martina completed the Fellowship in Biomedical Science at the University of the West of England, Bristol in 1995 and then took up a senior role in the Blood Transfusion laboratory at Crumlin hospital in 2001. Martina is currently a member of the National Transfusion Advisory Group Scientific Special Interest Group. Her special interest is in promoting safe transfusion for paediatric patients.
